Troy,

Thank you for your comment. While checking out your church website, I couldn't help but wonder what doctrinal matters we could possibly be in agreement about. I would love to hear where we agree. Would you mind sharing?

I pastor an independent church in the Greater Houston area. I resigned from the Southwest Region Conference in 1990 and have a great deal of respect for you and wife's decision. I know that was not easy. As well, I went to Oakwood with your father, Don McPhaull. I can look at you and tell that's your dad. He was at WOCG and had a program called, "Morning Joy." I named my daughter Joy because of the inspiration of that program. I also have a service called, "Sunday Morning Joy," each Sunday as well as my Sabbath Celebration each Saturday. I did not grow up Adventist and have never really been a "cultural Adventist" as I call it.

I read with great interest the journey you took and where you are now. Once I am able I will locate your information because I would like to discuss further with you. While I am in some agreement with you on some of the doctrinal matters, I think I have a different perspective.

Trying to leave hospital in few minutes but I will be in touch. And, may God bless your family's boldness and strong commitment to Him.

Hi Jo,
Thanks for your comments and your insights. Indeed Jesus IS enough.
We are about 4 hours from Longview. I have heard of that college but don't know much about it.
God bless you,

Read your article in Proclamation. I wanted to comment on your idea that African Americans have improved their lives within the chrch. We were rescued from Adventism thanks to Jesus back in 2004. We left due to doctrinal reasons. I took Pastoral Care and Counseling at WWC (same classes as the Theology majors except no Hebrew (had to take Greek, though) and no preaching classes). Anyway, we were both immersed in the doctrine, so it was Jesus that removed the scales from our eyes to see the obvious truth that Paul wrote whole books in the New Testement to try to get through to people JUST LIKE ADVENTISTS (People who make a deal out of the day you worship, the food you eat, want to be "remnent" etc...). I just want to say that although we are not African American, our family that has choosen Adventism as been more educated, had more oppertuities, etc..., than the rest of the family, so I think I know where you're coming from. For me becoming just a regular Christian meant I had no place in which to express myself musically. I don't do praise band work as I'm a preformer. God is helping me hang in and just have HIM be enough, but it's been hard. The other painful thing has been the loss of communitiy. We have been at the same church for 7 years and still don't belong. All to say Jesus is still a big enough reason to do the right thing and say Yes to him. Thank you for sharing your beautiful story. How close are you to Longview Texas? Our kids checked out a college there - Louterneau University (not sure how to spell that). It's a non-denomination Christian college that is considered "The MIT of the South" for engineering, science etc.. .our kids are interested as they are not sure if they want to go into Engineering or Nursing, and that college has both. It was amazing to visit Texas for the first time and feel the warmth of the people in the south. We are from Northwest where people tend to be quite distant and cold... anyway. Praise God you were rescued!!

Please feel free to email us anytime to compare notes. It is indeed sad that so many find the errors of Adventism, but don't have a firm grasp on the Gospel. It's the danger of having wholeheartedly believed in the counterfeit for so long. Blessings to you.

Gerard,

Thank you for your kind words. You are correct; I did not discuss my doctrinal disagreements with you. Knowing that you are a member of the Conference administration, I am surprised that you are surprised that I didn't.
I'm wondering... what motivated you to post this in a public forum when you have my email and FB accounts (and we've communicated via both in the past)?
I'm wondering...even though you recognize that I'm following Christ, why is it still important to you that I remain open to Adventism?
I'm wondering ... why, even now, you choose to spin and defend Adventist doctrines without Biblical support?

At any rate, I'm happy to learn that you read Proclamation.

God's blessings to you.

Sincerely,

Ben

DEAR BROTHER BEN, JUST FINISHED THE WONDERFUL STORY OF YOUR JOURNEY FROM THE SDA CHURCH IN THE JAN-MAR 11 PROCLAMATION MAGAZINE. LOOKS LIKE GERARD DID NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU AND DELINA WERE SAYING AS YOU WERE DOING YOUR BIBLE STUDIES AND THE HOLY SPIRIT WAS OPENING THE EYES OF YOUR HEART, TO SEE THE TRUTH, FOUND ONLY IN THE BIBLE, GODS WORD. MY WIFE IS AN SDA, THE PROBLEM I FIND IS LIKE GERARD, SDA'S ARE TAUGHT TO ONLY BELIEVE EGW. WHAT A SHAME, GLAD YOU FOUND THE WAY OUT. GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY.

I was excited to read your article in Proclamation. My husband and I also transitioned out of Adventism in 2004. Even though we know many people who have left the SDA church, very few have studied their way out and understand the doctrinal errors. I was hoping to create contact with you so we can "compare notes."

Hi Ben

Hey Buddy, saw your article in the Proclammation. Interesting journey but certainly not one I would take. The article seemed to suggest that none of your colleagues in ministry really sat down with you to discuss doctrinal issues--well Ben--I don't recall your bringing it up to me with the many discussions we had in my office about ministry issues.
However, be that as it may, as your brother in Christ I wish you all the best in Jesus. You certainly have a lovely family and I miss the freshness you brought to our meetings.

You mention where you differ with Adventism in the article but you do not really outline specifically where the doctrines fall short of Biblical support--perhaps that was not the scope of the article. The Proclammation issue also mentions the former SDA conference that you attended. Well, I wonder how you managed to navigate such doctrines as the human spirit (did he say--eternal spirit) and eternal hell-talk about dissonance with the concept of "God is love." Then the sabbath issue--it is very interesting that many non-SDA Christians are beginning to "get" the sabbath issue as well as death sleep. Gabe Lyons in his book The Next Christian deals much with Sabbath issues and their value. Steve Green has been noted to find value in Sabbath keeping as well. The Sabbath issue, rightly understood and practiced, is a spiritual discipline that fosters our rest in Jesus rather than to detract from it. With regard to Sunday, I think you know all the arguments there. Dr. Bacchiocchi has done definitive work in this area which much of the Christian world is only beginning to embrace.

But this communique is not meant to discuss doctrinal issues--that is not the scope of this communication. It is only a point of contact for one reason--I really appreciate you as a brother in Christ. I really appreciated all the freshness and enthusiasm that you brought to our meetings. I really appreciated your willingness to focus on Jesus and I wish you God's Spirit as you journey in your walk with the Lord.

In addition, in the true "spirit" of Adventism--I hope you do not close the door and your mind to future dialogue about doctrinal issues. For me, as a follower of Jesus, one who believes in His unchanging love and grace--I hope you continue on your Biblical journey and have some serious dialogue with your Adventist brothers in Christ.

Your brother in Jesus
